About the Place
Old Timer Cafe, nestled in the heart of St Ignatius, Montana, is a genuine gem for those who cherish hearty, comforting meals served with true warmth. From the moment you step inside at 278 Mountain View Dr, you’re greeted by a welcoming atmosphere that instantly reminds you of dining with family. The connection between the owners, Jay and Indy, and their guests shapes the heart of this small-town diner experience.
The standout feature here is the generosity of the portions—truly massive servings that satisfy both appetite and soul. Whether it’s their legendary 2½ pound double cheeseburger with bacon or a plate featuring local buffalo and beef, each dish showcases quality ingredients with an old-style, no-nonsense approach. Breakfast is served all day, drawing in lovers of classic American fare from pancakes to hash browns, though some may find the sides a tad conventional in preparation.
Service is not just efficient; it’s personal and attentive. As friends and large groups alike find their way to Old Timer Cafe, they’re treated with the same care and respect, often seated in private rooms for a cozy dining experience. The staff, led by the amiable Dusty, go above and beyond to make every visit memorable, imbuing the space with a family-like vibe that guests often praise.
While the menu is vast, featuring everything from fish to gluten-free bread options, it remains grounded in delivering straightforward, honest flavors. The large portions and the friendly environment create a place that feels like a rare, authentic slice of Montana hospitality. If you seek a welcoming spot with big plates and a community spirit, Old Timer Cafe stands out as a new favorite with timeless appeal.
“ One of THE BEST RESTAURANTS I’ve been to in years. It was our first time there and it immediately felt like coming in to have dinner with family. The food was made with quality ingredients and the proportions are insane! We got to meet the owner and his son who took the time to stop and visit with us. Definitely a new favorite. ”
“ Friendly People and BIG Portions!!! My friends and I couldn't finish it all. Nice to know they have gluten free bread if you need it as a option. Fryer is used for all foods so keep that in mind if you are trying to stay gluten free. ”
“ Wow. Dusty & his staff were incredible! We arrived with a group of 18 people, that included 10 kids under 8 yrs old and from the second we walked in, we were treated like family and instantly felt comfortable! We were guided back to our own private room and were given phenomenal service! They really over- delivered! Food portions were VERY large and everything we had was pretty phenomenal! Especially the onion rings, bison burger, & huckleberry cheesecake! Stopping at this small town joint was honestly one of the highlights of our trip because of how we were treated! We loved it here and will definitely go out of our way to return again next time we are passing through this area of Montana! ”
“ Absolutely phenomenal place! Best place I've been to in a long time! Great menu selection! Lots of options! Food was absolutely top notch old style restaurant. The way I like it, the workers and the people that own it are great and phenomenl people. Missoula area restaurants Don't even touch this place as far as food and environment. The food they serve is absolutely presentable! I wouldn't give this place a five star. I would give this place a ten star! I will be back many times to experience the environment and the people again and the food! It's just all around a great place to experience. I will definitely recommend this place to a lot of people to give them business and im bring my brother here because he will say the same thing. ”
“ A small town family diner, ran by Jay and his wife Indy. Great people and even better food! They treat you like family, even as a stranger. They have a massive menu, with breakfast all day. If you get a chance, don't miss their 2 1/2lb patties double cheese burger with bacon! ”
